Program Description:

Founded in 1959, the San Francisco Mime Troupe (SFMT) has been entertaining the Bay Area ever since through free political comedy in the parks.Classes:
The SF Mime Troupe Youth Theater Project (YTP) is a unique place to learn theater. The troupe performs in different venues, usually with topics that range from current events to the craziness of life. The program gives teens a venue to express themselves artistically, through performing, be it on the street, in a cafe, or in a theater. YTP runs from February through April and is centered in the Mission. Kids are chosen from different communities to attend a free eight-week acting and playmaking workshop twice a week (4pm–7pm). This culminates in an original performance (created during the session) that requires lots of time for practice. Transportation cost and dinner are provided.YTP collaborates with the Brava Theater Academy's Running Crew, Precita Eyes Mural Arts Center, and the Bay Area Video Coalition for the T.N.T. Youth Arts Festival. They invite DJs, dancers, musicians, photographers, painters, sculptors, moviemakers, and young, creative voices everywhere to exhibit their work. Expect to see spoken word, short films, beats and breaks, and live painting. The Young California Writers' Project (YCWP) matches high school students with local playwrights to develop their own short plays. The top nine scripts are chosen and performed by professional actors and directors in public staged readings at a local theatre.Camps:SFMT offers an eight to nine-week-long summer theater workshop for middle and high school youth from around the Bay Area. They bring together a diverse group of 45 young adults who are developing their voice as artists, performers, and writers. The workshop participants focus on ensemble building and physical acting styles while developing original one-act plays. Themes are generated by participants as they challenge one another to look deep into the realities and possibilities of modern life. The workshop culminates in a performance of three new works in a professional theater with full technical support. The result is a life-changing experience for the youth and an inspiring, enlightening, and moving night of performance for our audiences.Typically, workshops run from the last week in June or the first week of July to the last week in August. Contact SFMT for more details about participating in YPT workshops. If you are a college undergraduate, graduate student, or recent graduate, ask about internship opportunities.
