The Embarcadero YMCA is conveniently located near the Financial District, SOMA, South Beach, and a quick Muni or BART ride from many neighborhoods in the City. The world-class facilities and professional staff make a membership here a worthwhile investment. Classes:Teen fitness memberships include an orientation on equipment and full use of the facilities. Kids ages 13 to 17 can join for $20 per month. Discount memberships of three months and six months are available. Teens are also welcome to play basketball, volleyball, wheelchair rugby, and, occasionally, dodgeball. Community karate classes are offered by Sensei Wayne Shockness, a 4th degree blackbelt in Shotokan karate. Call (415) 615-1341 for more information. The Embarcadero YMCA offers group swim lessons for children from 6 months to 14 years old on Saturdays for eight class sessions. Costs range from $80–$110. Private and semi-private swim lessons may also be available. Contact the Aquatics Department at (415) 615-1305 for more information. They also have a competitive swim team for kids ages 5 to 14 that practices on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Costs range from $120–$150 per season. Camps:Camps offer lots of adventures, such as swimming, arts and crafts, games, sports, and field trips to different fun venues in the Bay Area. Campers in grades 6–8 participate in an overnighter. They also offer a two-week Counselor-in-Training (CIT) program for teens in grades 9–12. This program is free with program or facility membership. You get 90 minutes of private time in the 15-meter pool along with a lifeguard. They have a party room where you get another 90 minutes of party time. Costs are $300 for 1 to 20 children, or up to $350 for 31 to 40 children. Afterschool: The Embarcadero YMCA hosts the Year Round Enrichment Program, the afterschool program for Bessie Carmichael Elementary. During the school year, they are open Mondays through Fridays from 3pm–6pm. In the summer, they are open Mondays through Fridays from 8am–6pm for an eight-week cycle. This branch also provides homework help and afterschool enrichment programs to children of formerly homeless families at Canon Barcus Community House and the Rich Sorro Commons, the low-income housing development in China Basin. They also provide afterschool services at Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy.  That program operates during the school year Mon–Fri from 8am–9:30am and 3:30pm–6pm and 8:30am–4:30pm in the summer.  Youth & Government:Youth & Government is an annual YMCA program that engages urban youth in a hands-on approach to learning democracy. Teens from grades 10-12 spend 6 months researching the lawmaking process, how government works, and drafting legislation. The program culminates in a 5-day model legislative session and court in Sacramento, complete with youth governor, youth justices and the enactment of legislation. If you'd like to participate in this great leadership development opportunity call (415) 615-1309.This branch also hosts the Youth Chance High School program, which is a free alternative school for youth 15 to 24 years old. They help kids get their GED diplomas and facilitate job placements and college counseling.
