Description
Parents Place is the Jewish Family and Children's Services' (JFCS) resource center that offers a variety of programs for families with children of all ages.
Well-known for their Preschool Preview Nights and other events that help families with school and childcare options, Parents Place also offers these programs, among others:
- On the Mark is a mentoring program in which kids 8 to 18 are matched with mentors for life skills, self-esteem, relationship-building, and tutoring.
- College-Prep Programs such as SAT courses, tutoring and academic support, and college essay assistance.
- The Next Chapter Project enables youth in grades 10–12 learn about the Holocaust. Weekly workshops allow participants to study Holocaust history and art, how to write and document oral histories, and how the Jewish community in Poland has re-emerged after the 1989 fall of Communism.
- JFCS's youth development program, YouthFirst, helps teens learn life skills to transition smoothly and successfully into adulthood. YouthFirst also offers teens health counseling, job, volunteer, and internship opportunities, and loans and grants for college and summer camps.
- The Center for Children with Special Needs provides support for families with children with developmental, behavioral, and learning challenges.
Classes:
Parents Place offers many different types of classes for kids in different age groups, including:
- Sign up your preschooler (up to 4 years old) for preschool preparation, music, cooking, or drop-in play time. Some of these classes fill up quickly so book ahead.
- Meet other families when bringing your child ages 1 to 4 to the Child Development Drop-In Center. The cost to drop in is $8 per family per visit.
- YouthFirst offers classes for teens to prepare for college: a basic SAT preparatory class, tutoring, college essay writing, and math and English college credit courses at San Francisco State. Some classes require a one-time $10 fee for registration or materials.
- Children with special needs can sign up for therapeutic music classes, socialization playgroups, and more.
- Get your elementary-schooler prepared for earthquakes and other emergencies by signing up for the Children's Earthquake Prep program for kids in grades 3–5.
Parent Resources:
Parents Place is well-known for their extensive offerings of parent education classes and workshops and counseling and support services. Members have access to a fantastic lending library that carries books, videos, magazines and other reference materials for pregnancy, childbirth, parenting, and other family topics. They have a terrific volunteer clearinghouse for adults and kids as well as an online child care bulletin board that makes it easy for parents to find child care providers and vice versa.
