The Young Musicians Program (YMP) at UC Berkeley is a unique opportunity for musically gifted students from low-income families all over the Bay Area to get an outstanding music education on a full scholarship basis. The YMP faculty comprises the Bay Area's best musicians and music teachers. Students explore different styles of music such as classical, folk, rhythm and blues, and jazz.
YMP holds auditions in March of each year. To be eligible for the program, applicants must be between 9 and 17 years old, US citizens or permanent residents, and meet the income guidelines. Students who are accepted begin with the program during YMP's intensive summer session and continue to take music lessons and perform at recitals during the school year. Attendance is mandatory for all YMP activities and events.
