Bayview Beacon Center

The Bayview Beacon Center, a program of the Bayview YMCA, is located at Phillip & Sala Burton High School. They are implementing the community schools model to ensure that every student graduates college-ready. The Beacon gives youth the tools to thrive, while also strengthening the legs that support them: parents, family and community. All Beacon programs and services are free and are open to everyone — especially students, parents, and residents of Bayview Hunters Point, the Portola District, and Visitacion Valley.

The center offers a gamut of programs for children, youth, and families in the areas of education, career development, leadership, health, arts, and recreation. Afterschool programs are augmented by employment and family services, as well as case management, structured recreational activities, and nutrition classes. 

Beacon Centers throughout the City offer a free afterschool program called Gateway to Fitness. Kids ages 10 to 14 can sign up for fun activities such as bike trips, skateboarding, hiking, and contemporary dance forms such as hip hop and break dancing. After completing six to eight weeks in the program, the participant and one parent or guardian can get a free annual membership at a YMCA branch.
