Trips for Kids was founded on the belief that every child should have the opportunity to ride and care for a bicycle and spend quality time outdoors. The founders rounded up some volunteers to take inner-city, disadvantaged kids on mountain-biking excursions in Marin County. They have a recycled bike shop, Re-Cyclery, at 610 4th Street in San Rafael and an earn-a-bike program where kids can earn points toward their own bikes or bikes parts. Kids from community-based agencies, foster homes, and schools that serve disadvantaged youth from the Bay Area can take advantage of Trips for Kids' programs, for FREE. Each year, up to 45% of the participants are from the City—from organizations such as Boys and Girls clubs, the Chinatown Youth Center, different YMCA branches, the Tenderloin Youth Center, and school groups.
The Rides Program takes up to eight riders per week on bike excursions in Marin and in Golden Gate Park. The Earn-a-Bike program and job training workshops give Marin County's disadvantaged kids a place to go after school to learn about bike mechanics, bike safety, outdoor adventures on bikes, and environmental issues (the Green Cyclers program). Participants in the programs earn credit toward a bike, accessories, or parts from the Re-Cyclery and kids 14 years and over are eligible to be hired to help in the earn-a-bike program.
The Re-Cyclery thrift shop raises over 50% of the funding for the Trips for Kids programs and is the source for all the equipment in the Earn-a-Bike program. They recondition and recycle used bikes, parts, and accessories.
